An event was held at Tunisia Yunus Emre Institute (YEI) on the occasion of 18 March Martyrs' Memorial Day and the 109th anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Tunisia Ahmet Misbah Demircan, Military Attaché Colonel Aydın Bayar, YEI Coordinator Ali İhsan Çevik, representatives of Turkish institutions in Tunisia, Turks living in Tunisia and Tunisian citizens attended the event, organized under the auspices of Türkiye's Embassy in Tunisia and in cooperation with Türkiye 's Military Attaché to Tunisia and YEI.

In the event, which started with a minute of silence to commemorate the martyrs and then the reading of the National Anthem, Colonel Bayar explained the historical process of the Çanakkale Naval Victory.

Reminding that the Çanakkale front was one of the fronts where the Ottoman army, which had to fight on ten different fronts in the First World War, won victory, “The Battles of Çanakkale, fought between 18 March 1915 and 09 January 1916, are extremely important in terms of their results for Turkish and world history. From the perspective of Turkish history, in addition to being great military victories, these wars extended the life of the Ottoman Empire and helped the emergence of commanders and statesmen who undertook important duties in the National War of Independence, especially Mustafa Kemal." Bayar said.

When looking at the Çanakkale Naval Victory from the perspective of world history, Bayar stated that, in addition to being effective in prolonging the First World War, it prevented the aid sent to Russia and led to the collapse of Russia and the emergence of the Bolshevik Revolution, and continued his words as follows:

"It was recorded as an overseas operation carried out together by multinational land, naval and air forces, supported by a navy of unprecedented size until that date, and it also broke a taboo by giving this navy, which was described as invincible, its first defeat."

Ambassador Demircan, in his statement, used the following expressions: “The Çanakkale Victory takes its place in our national history as a life and death war. As a nation, we emerged victorious from this war. On the anniversary of this war, we commemorate our heroes and martyrs in Tunisia and all over the world. When we look at the brotherhood ties of our country with Tunisia, we see that they have similar heroic solidarity and struggle. “I would like to thank all the institutions that contributed to the event.”

YEI Coordinator Çevik also noted that they were happy to host the event organized on the occasion of 18 March  Martyrs' Memorial Day and the 109th anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory.
